5 Reasons Why Blogging Is More Than Simply Traditional Writing

Every Blogger is a Writer but Every Writer is not a Blogger. Sad but true. Blogging is more than simply writing and hitting the ‘Publish’ button online. You can’t be a successful blogger if you don’t have the required skills to promote and grow your blog online.

Besides Writing, you require lots of things to do for being a successful blogger online. This blog post will share those things with you. Here, in this blog post, I have shared 6 reasons Why blogging is more than simply writing a blog post?

1. Marketing and Promoting your blog online

If you’re under the assumption that readers will automatically find your blog without you promoting it, you are mistaken. It is impossible to get readers in this digital marketing era without promoting it. You should be familiar with how to a) share blog posts on your Social Media page b) use Google AdWords c) build Email lists and d) create content online.

If you’re still confused? Just have a look over major influencer online. You will find out that I mean. Neil Patel, co-founder of Hello Bar, Crazy Egg, and Kissmetrics is a good writer but also posts regularly on social media accounts. He simply does not focus on good writing only but also sells himself online. He is everywhere, whether it’s his Personal Blog, Facebook, Twitter, or Quora.

This is because he knows the importance of branding and promotion. He knows that more than 7.5 billion blog posts are published every day, and almost 90% of them remain virtually untouched.

2. Repurpose your content online

Days are gone when blogging was simply limited to the text format. Now, blogging goes beyond it. Besides text format, it also is done through videos, infographics, eBooks, podcasts, etc. You should know all these forms of content if you want to create a successful blog online. There is no harm in repurposing the same content in different formats. However, you should know how to repurpose the same effectively.

Remember, you simply can’t copy and paste the same content in all formats online. Different forms of content require different skills to get successful. If it is a podcast, you need to be very good at speaking and editing it. Similarly, you can’t copy and paste the entire text post into Infographic. The infographic should use less text and more visuals in it.

3. Search Engine Optimization

Without any doubt, writing and publishing online is not as simple as writing on a piece of paper. Besides writing for your readers, you also need to think of search engines online. If your content is not ranking in the top two positions of the search result, you will lose 50% chance of getting clicks. Here, the role of Search Engine Optimization comes in.

No matter how good you write, if your article is not loved by Google, no one is going to read it. So, when it’s online, you need to write for both- Your Readers and Search Engines as well. Moreover, SEO keeps on changing. SEO techniques applicable today, may not be relevant in the future. So, accordingly, you need to keep updating your blog posts to retain their ranking in search results.

Let us understand this with an example.

Suppose, in 2000, you succeeded in ranking your content by simply building backlinks using exact match anchor text. This does not mean that the same strategy will work in 2023 as well. Exact Match anchor text is not necessary for backlink relevance. Google now uses its surrounding text to establish link importance. In such cases, you need to update your strategies as per changing search algorithm. To support this example better, below I have listed out major changes made to Google algorithms since inception.

The above infographic clearly shows how important it is to keep yourself updated with SEO changes getting implemented almost every year.

4. Require technical knowledge

Starting a blog and publishing blog posts does not require any kind of programming language to learn. However, you may need it when your blog starts growing online. Once a blog becomes successful, all questions like efficient hosting, loading time, traffic balancing, etc. will come into place. To achieve these things, you need to either learn the computer technicality or else hire a consultant to do the same.

Obviously, you don’t need to learn how to write code but at least you should know how to edit, copy and paste the already written code. This is because you may find the solution online. However, you need to edit the same as per your requirements and thereby copy and paste the same at the right place on your site. Moreover, it is feasible for you to hire a consultant for every small problem that you may face on your blog. Depending too much on a consultant can put your blogging site at risk. So, you must have at least a basic knowledge of programming and the technicality of website design and development.

5. Networking with other bloggers

Networking is another important aspect of blogging that differentiate it from simply writing. It’s very important for you to quickly build a strong network that you can use to spread the word about your blog and grow it.

Obviously, this requires regular efforts such as emailing bloggers for backlinks, attending blogging-related events, commenting on others’ blog posts, etc. However, once done you will see the magic. Your strategies will start showing positive results to you.

Let’s say there are three influencers X, Y, and Z online. Just have a look over their blogs. I am sure you will find them promoting each other’s content online. X will promote Y, Y will promote Z and Z will promote X on their respective blogs. Right? This is because they are in touch with each other. They know it is easier to achieve goals when partnered with each other.

Here are a few tips to grow your networking online:

  • Strategically comment on their blog posts
  • Attend blogging-related events
  • Publish guest posts on other’s blog
  • Share their blog posts on your social media wall
  • Be the first to comment on their social posts
  • Offer your assistance if required

In the long term, partnering with other bloggers will definitely help you.

Over to You

So, blogging is more than simply traditional writing. Think twice, if you are planning to start a blog because you love writing. After some time, you will start feeling frustrated and quit blogging. Always remember, blogging is an art that goes beyond traditional writing skills.
